The Masterplan on Kuressaare PDF Prindi

Currently, a new Masterplan is being developed in Kuressaare that will determine the town development until 2010 and 2050 in broad perspective.

Main objectives

  • Planning the main directions of the spatial-economic development.
  • Identifying the requirements for sustainable development and connecting them to the spatial-economic development.
  • Identifying the overall land utilisation and construction conditions.
  • Identifying functional zones.
  • Identifying the prospective land areas for further construction activity.
  • Applying restrictions for the construction activity.

    Functional zoning
    Kuressaare is a functionally well-zoned town:
  • The historically developed town centre and the surrounding old town area make up the administrative and business centre.
  • The dwelling areas, surrounding the old town, are connected to both the town centre and production areas.
  • The seaside area is the main recreation area. Also, the forests in the vicinity of the town serve recreational needs.
  • The production area has an advantageous location in the northern part of the town.

    The principles of the land utilisation and building up
  • Maintaining and developing the construction traditions of the existing valuable town parts.
  • Improving the living environment in the less valuable town sections.
  • Planning the land areas, required for the prospective development.
