New data about the older building history of Kuressaare Castle

The building-historical researches of the Kuressaare Castle have not been connected with the NE-part of the first circular wall and the outside of the first moat until the piping installation of the Saaremaa Museum was carried out in the years 1993-1995.

As the piping was put into the ground just along the E-part of the first circular wall we gained some information about this part of the Kuressaare Castle which made it possible to draw some conclusions.
- The outside of the ME- and NW-part of the first moat has been probably surrounded by the small wall (contrescarp).
- Between the NE-part of the first circular wall and the defence tower of the convent building has been situated an at least two-story residence, the cellar and hypocaust of which were disintered from the ground.
- Next to this building, very close to the N-corner of the first circular wall was one more very small building the functions of which have remained unclear.
- The NE-part of the first circular wall has been built in two different periods: one half was only 0,8 m thick and built of dolomite, the other half was 1,6 m thick and built of granite.
- In the E-corner of the first circular wall has been one more building that was built together with the circular wall and was quite well finished.
