Pühatu springs

The turnoff to Pühatu springs is at the five kilometer mark on the Kuressaare - Võhma road, towards Pähkla. This is Saaremaa's largest and best-known spring where up to Medieval times and probably even later, people from all over Saaremaa came to make offerings. Metal coins were most often thrown into the pool. Nature spirits were asked for help to cure sickness, ensure good crops, help find lost animals, wandering husbands, etc.

The word "Pühatu" sounds a little bit like "bottomless" in the Saaremaa dialect. And that is what the spring looks like: a green ten-meter-wide bottomless pool in a wooded copse.
